Floating collage....restoring my memory...Completed piece

It's been a while since I did a floating collage.  Need to get the brain thinking differently then with my other works with the straight edges. The floating collages really stand out because of the wonderful edge of the papers.

Here is my start...there will be two layers. I'm kind of leaving the middle area open so that if when bring in the second floating collage it will rise up from there.

I've done a glazing and now the edges are all toned down and the papers have a hue about about them that unifies them.  I've brought in a big graphic crayon and repeated the line again a few times and added a scribble at the ends.

Look at the second from the bottom and then bottom one here and you can see the change of the crayon area...this is when my childhood flashes back and I get to color again.

More to come...need to run out do to do some food shopping for the Reception. Back to work on it later.   I've got a wonderful orange flower to work in to this piece.

Now this is the smaller piece that will sit on top of the bottom one. Using the papers that I've used below it is a challenge to use them so that they don't repeat right on top of each other or if they do how can you get them to stand out differently.

Completed piece...Loving the outside edge of the piece all the amazing raw edges. I would like to mat this and frame it so I have a completed it piece.

The edges of the collage are very delicate and fragile, You have to watch how far they hang out...about an Inch is good but more then it can flop over and present the floating look and feel to it.

  1. Hi Laura,

I love the concept of a 'floating collage'. I have been following your blog for awhile and I love your work.

I'm the programs person for San Diego Book Arts and I was wondering if you had any availability to come and teach for us in 2016 or 2017? I tried sending you a message on your contact page but I'm getting a server error message.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

    Thanks.
