Begin again with Design

In order to understand, one might need to go back to basics, See, touch and arrange the simple square shapes to see what is possible in the simplest way and how color reacts and plays off of each other.  Actually doing and having your own reference to look back on can really affirm the knowing process of learning. Well for me it works that way. Putting all that you learn into action and see it happening before your eyes with paper, scissor and glue sticks.  I'm always amazed. Today I will present a three day workshop at Naperville Art League, I have a few students that are venturing out and joining me.

This was a color study sketch but it can be also a shape study and composition study. Breaking things down to build back up and really see how everything relates and move the eyes is a core aspect of design.

Three colors, red, black and blue. As you see one color is more in value and amount and how it can over power and dominate...though the other colors singular can stand alone, if black was used where the blue was it would really take over.  It's so good to see it happening and keep record of it.

Using the magazines papers and looking for value, words, font and other solids can help you see Value and contrast.  Light against dark and dark against light.  Next to the Magazine sketch is a graphite pencil sketch of value.  This is always studied in art it's so important to be able to see the difference.

Contrast of natural verses solid, shape verses organic,
bright verse dark...so many ways to look at contrast.

Well this one I throw in here because I like the red dot or circle.  Yes you keep coming to area where it is at though you venture out and see the other colors, sizes, shapes, contrast, value and lines as of the edges of the paper and the one's made in the magazine paper.

The time spent in study is well worth it and never finished, that is my belief as you can always work these skills more and push yourself to new levels and have some great inspiration for more collage works or paints.
