East Direction, Element of Air

The element of Air is part of the East direction and one with creation. The breath circles in from the winds and we can hear it in the first cry of a newborn take their first breath of life. (Om) The element of North, Earth is a fixed element, but air is most definitely a mover and shaker.  Air is connected to the mind, wisdom, spirit, and the soul.

The element of air is a force that is everywhere and part of everything, yet it cannot be seen. We experience the present of air by how it affects other things.  Watch the trees move as the wind makes it way through or the smoke from an outdoor fire or an incense.

Air represents a spiritual faith, reminding us that there is much more to this world than what we can see.  Air teaches us that we must grow and change as the world does.

The pessimist complains about the wind;
The optimist expects it to change;
The realist adjusts the sails
~ William Arthur Ward

Air cannot be captured or tamed, though we certainly know it is with us.  It can be still, fierce, or gentle and in just moments it will turn. Air carries a message, listen to the wind, and pay attention to what direction is comes.  Our native people believe the winds are spirits and are called upon in ceremony for many reasons. The winds have spirit energy for healing.

We’ve heard this before about the east that it’s about new beginnings and it’s also about communication. The connection of all the other elements together makes it essential for life. The breath of air continual moves and becomes part of us all. We breath in and out a natural practice of letting go and opening to new possibilities.

Air element is the breath of life and so connected to the soul.

Take a look at the words below and the spiritual meanings of them. Spend some time with them and see how they can be of guidance for you as we continue to work the East Direction of the Medicine and understand your own inner compass.

Disclaimer:

I am of strong East European descent with a connection to the earth and nature. The spiritual work of our inner being is one of the individual persons.  A lifetime of seeking to continue to connect to what is true has led myself on a learning path in great respect for all. There is no claim of being a decent from a Native American tribe. The natural ways of the Medicine Wheel are gentle and all-encompassing for growth of our spiritual self.  I share this because I'm only sharing gifts pass through me from working through my own life's experience and listening and learning from all those that gather in the circle. A student of life is a great grounded place to be as our teacher are everywhere.  Any trail that leads you to look within is always going to lead you through a journey of self-discovery on so many levels.  No one says it going to be easy or without pain, but the reality is we become who we are meant to be as we heal our own wounds for service of others in our life.   Keep showing up, you are worth it!
