Passing on being weigh down and subdued

It came yesterday...20" Ocean Drum...Oh my gosh!!! so cool...it makes you slow down.  You hold it in you hands, and it's big.  Then you tilt it every so slightly and the buckshot that is in there slides across the hide on the inside and makes this odd sound till you counter it with a tilt from another directions. Depending how fast you move it the sound can become louder or softer.  Creating a movement sounds like this is awesome...Calms the crazy chaos washes it away.

When the UPS Man handed it to me he thought I was pretty quirky....Asked didn't I have enough noise with the Big Black Dog-Hank barking at him?   No not around this house I responded.

When my Youngest Daughter got home she knew just what it was...At her work they have Water Wednesday...And the people she works have group session and they allow everyone to do this.   I witnesses it at the end of the drumming circle as a ending of the evening event.

I shared my new experience with a few people and the faces I've been receiving have been looks like "OK your crazy,"  I remember Native Elder share while working with our 3rd graders one Fall-my Second oldest daughter,  out in Palos IL. at Swallow Cliffs.  We have become an Oppressed Nation.

Oppress -verb (used with object)

1.
to burden with cruel or unjust impositions or restraints; subject to aburdensome or harsh exercise of authority or power:
a people oppressed by totalitarianism.
2.
to lie heavily upon (the mind, a person, etc.):
Care and sorrow oppressed them.
3.
to weigh down, as sleep or weariness does.
4.
Archaic. to put down; subdue or suppress.
5.
Archaic. to press upon or against; crush.
At that point all that he would have liked us to do was sing, and dance a little.   Out of some weird fear...and now I know the fear of being different or looking different or looking silly and having people make fun of you because you participated in something of this nature...The opinions of others directing our choices to really live and experience things how small or big.

Point is we,  no I have let them stop me by their looks and words.  But when you go and experience something different like this and you feel so alive...well....?   I'm so glad I did.

Working on my Oppressed Nature and come out of what ever shell I was under. Or it could be checking something off my bucket list that has been tucked under other things for so long.

Oh I need to share my experience with the Tree Spirited Woman...and with you all.

  1. Thanks for sharing, Laura. I bet you feel good after writing out your thoughts and emotions. Well OF COURSE you do! You wouldn't still be journaling after 20 years if if it wasn't of value to you. I have tried many times over the years to get in the habit of morning pages. Really, I simply haven't COMMITTED to them. You've gotten really good at checking things off your list! You know how to get things done! Other people don't get in your way and you have learned how to say No. "I call it Vitamin N. It strengthens resolve, tenacity, perseverance, patience." -John Rosemond I just read this in the Atlanta Journal newspaper. You go girl!

  2. Hey, have a wonderful time at Dillmans with your class! "When my daughter was about 7 years old, she asked me what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college. That my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared back at me, incredulous, and said, 'you mean they forget?' ". -Howard Ikemoto. I read this in the book, Art &Fear.
