No matter what I do....it's about paper

and when asked what's  your passion?   darn I say paper?

I use paper for my medium in creating my work and the paper comes from sources such as magazines, packing brown paper, recycle bin, maps, book pages and some times I stain tissue papers and bring in my own hand made papers from cattail and yucca leaves.  I haven't quite figured it out and why but paper is it... second close to clay.

I think when I was young Nature was my biggest friend...though I hated having to do the chores I did and once I was usually about a 1/3 of the way in, I wouldn't  let any one know I was enjoying myself greatly Cutting lawn an acre mind you. Once a week when I was old enough to drive the tractor and push mower. But being out side was good at young age...sound of nature all around...I'm drawn to it often for centering and balance. I listened to the inner nudge to so be out walk the paths sway with the winds and bring you four legged friends out too.

My mom only 4 foot 11 inches was the school bus driver... wonder if that was her thing when she was little...driving? because at the age of 70 she is still driving a bus for school children down in Arkansas..pretty proud of her. When I was a young adult she drove a semi truck across the United States, became a Million Mile driver... well trailing off as I usually do...the point I'm dragging you though is when I was younger in the third grade it hit me...I was awe stuck when I stayed after school while my mom did the bus run to take everyone home and the Mrs Paulsen asked me if I wanted to do the bulletin board for the class.  A bit in shock, honor and really scared but I said Yes...Yes! I'll do it and was handed the construction paper and scissor and a stapler. Little did I know that Layering was the gift present way back then...but the love of paper came from the coloring books I would color for my baby sister Patty...the smells and the texture another place I would be passionate about and didn't know it...

Morning memories, reflecting....all this over this morning collage mediation...could, should and would this make a nice first step for a larger piece?...Sure will...at this point it doesn't matter as much as answering the call again to play with paper...simple as a sketchbook, magazines, scissor and a glue stick...it's never the big moments as much as the small ones that added up.  Oh and I forgot to add a small piece of fine sand paper to created some texture and line... what early morning fun...now off to start the day...

  2. Isn't it amazing when we take the time to look back we truly can connect the dots that our paths were there from the beginning. Strongly reminds me of the quote by Steve Jobs...“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path; and that will make all the difference.” That's how I live my future, believing that the dots will connect when I look back. Laura, THANKS for sharing "little bit" more of your story this morning. I enjoyed it.

  4. Laura, I really love this image and your story about how your love of paper started. I have to tell you the circles of different color/texture paper reminded me of the planets and universe and how we all fit into it. Thanks again for sharing!

    1. Hi Nadine, they are a planet...I think Jupiter and it's moons...Nat. Geo. magazines...are my favorite next to art magazines...not so much images but the pages of large color and textures I then can work with better for the kind of collaging I do.
