Feeling a bit ashamed and Demo tonight

This boy here...white lip is a natural marking on him...Bite a little Schnauzer yesterday...Kind of a wild thing.  We took our walk and as we finish I usually look around the corner to see if there's anyone coming before I let him off the leash and run the cattail basin home...Silly me didn't look and was more interested in the paths that were leading into the cattail basin from the Coyotes.   Before I knew it I heard some dog commotion and Hank was already stopped but about 10 feet way from a woman with her to Schnauzers...she so quickly went in to panic mode...Looking like a Carnivals ride circling with two dogs on leashed hang in the air....Then it went fast and I Yelled...cause there was no way I could run up there to save the day... I yelled...Lady if you calm down, you're creating more then needs to be.. And she freaked out more and I was able to get Hank back on his leash....She was Scared and I would be to with a big black Great Dane running up to you...We walked  away from each other and I figured I hear something later in the day...8:30pm the woman police officer came to our door...The woman share that her dog did get bit...and that she's not going to the vet...and that she would like to make sure I keep my dog on the leash....I offered to pay the vet bill but if the woman doesn't get in right way then I can't be responsible for what happens.  Legally I can get fined as there is a sign posted about the village ordinance of all dogs have to be leashed and you are responsible to keep them on a leash...so feeling ashamed that I can't control my gentle giant.    Want to hide and not every walking him...but that's no good.  So I think I will face my fear and do it anyways today...it's cool but will do me good.  We have issue when we walk and another dog is coming or on the other side of the street. 130lbs of pure dog power lunging up like  bucking horse and then some deep chest growls is not a happy site for anyone one.  Hank watches and sees things coming...we usually have to go up into someone's driveway and wait till the other dog passes. Ashamed.  Then we go to the dog park and not problems, there's respect between the dogs it's unbelievable how they behave...when on the leash or the defensive gear kicks in things are not good. Cojo....in the skinny version.

On another note...I've got a demo tonight to go and present so I need to get my mind straight on this and work through this shame...My own I know...Grateful I didn't get ready for the demo till today...then give me time in the studio to response to this all.

Oh and I wanted another Great Dane...I think I received my answer...if I can't handle one what would I do with two...I'm determined to figure this all out. Theirs for sure something I do as my chocolate lab was like this too and I'm the main person.

  1. Ok, put the Dog walker expectation jacket on and Hanks got his jacket on for the cooler weather...his spike collar and off we go...didn't run into any dogs but heard main barking from their homes. we went in to practice as of we are doing a job and walking it is and nothing else...well a pee now and then...if need be. Chatted with neighbor about this and she's willing to help us if we walk by and Hank walking so we can practice our behavior...mine to...so back to class is what's in the picture.

  2. Oh my gosh .. I feel with you.. we have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks.. and I am so happy that here where we live only three other dogs are ..and we can unleash them on the fields.. I have to train hard to make shure that they are not running away after deers and other wild animals ... but this I have mostly managed...
but we can't always see everthing ...

sometimes when the fields are high with corn in summer I feel I can't let them free... because to many deers are in the fields..and the dogs smell them before I see the dangerous situation and if I don't cry in time ..they forget me and my boss job!
    ..
it's always hard to keep all in order...

all the best! for you and your wonderful giant...
I just know Great Danes with a heart out of gold and I think that as bigger the dog as less agressive...

    my rule!

    1. Thanks for sharing your Story Susi... I'm sure if we let Hank run after the coyotes he hears howling across the field...I'd be crying too...He chases after rabbits...moving target...loves that.

  3. Sorry for the dog commotions. I hope you find some good solutions that work for you and your sweet pooch. I know that when I went for training with a great, really positive trainer for my Chica's pulling problem (yellow lab), I felt so empowered afterwards. She is still far from perfect on the leash but I feel like I have done a lot to make myself the leader. Maybe a miracle coach is just around the corner for you ?
No guilt allowed though - you didn't do anything wrong. It's just a message that you need to change something.

    1. And change is what went into action Kim...that next day. put on my Dog walking hat and off we went...being the leader with still some issue and a good neighbor to help me...going to set up a time to work with her. Getting pride out of the way on my part is the second step...the first step was asking her for help. Thanks for you kind words and hugs.

  4. What a day! He is neutered? I somehow doubt the little dog was bit but maybe snapped at. There has to be some exaggerating to file a complaint. When Spike was jumping in front of horse stall, they claimed he bit the horse yet there weren't any punctures , scrapes or tears that were possibly current. I would take him to classes. More than anything else, it's embarrassing if you have not been practicing the weeks lesson and dog shows poorly. Keeps you on your toes, making good progress.

    1. Oh Doris...it's sad sit. when a 130lb. Dog jump up in the air like a stallion and lunges forward and then continue to do that....I'm at the mercy of it when that moment happens. I try to anticipate and catch it before it happens but still need work at it.. Yes Hank is neutered...and Yes I agree that it was a snap bit but still a bit....thanks for sharing Doris...I had wanted to take ride out yesterday but things didn't work as planned...

  5. Oh dear...so sorry that had to happen, Laura. I have no suggestions except what you are going to do. I am a poor dog trainer - never want to "break their spirit". But I do keep Henri leashed when walking him; I'm always fearful of him running after a rabbit or something and getting hurt. He is a sweetie with all people and loves loves loves the golden retriever next door...but with other dogs...you never know. They're animals.
