Artistic inspiration

Inspiration refers to an unconscious burst of creativity in a literary, musical, or other artistic endeavour. Literally, the word means "breathed upon," and it has its origins in both Hellenism and Hebraism. The Greeks believed that inspiration came from the muses, as well as the gods Apollo and Dionysus. Similarly, in the Ancient Norse religions, inspiration derives from the gods, such as Odin. Inspiration is also a divine matter in Hebrew poetics. In the Book of Amos the prophet speaks of being overwhelmed by God's voice and compelled to speak. In Christianity, inspiration is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

In modern psychology inspiration is not frequently studied, but it is generally seen as an entirely internal process. In each view inspiration is, by its nature, viewed as beyond the control of a person.

Modernist and modern concepts

Sigmund Freud and other later psychologists located inspiration in the inner psyche of the artist. The artist's inspiration came out of unresolved psychological conflict or childhood trauma. Further, inspiration could come directly from the subconscious. Like the Romantic genius theory and the revived notion of "poetic phrenzy," Freud saw artists as fundamentally special, and fundamentally wounded. Because Freud situated inspiration in the subconscious mind, Surrealist artists sought out this form of inspiration by turning to dream diaries and automatic writing, the use of Ouija boards and found poetry to try to tap into what they saw as the true source of art. Carl Gustav Jung's theory of inspiration reiterated the other side of the Romantic notion of inspiration indirectly by suggesting that an artist is one who was attuned to something impersonal, something outside of the individual experience: racial memory.

Off the beat and path there...I've been heavy into the self-esteem and that this morning lead me to Inspiration...what is? do you find it or does it find you?  and can you buy it? or does it just come to you?  I laugh now about buying inspirations in this day and age of McService we demand.

So forgive me for going off on a limb here but I'm going to hang out here for this post... speaking from my heart and soul and little bits of brain matter left after my young adult life. I ask myself questions... what is inspiration to me... and I can best describe it when it happens... And that's not always when I can act on it, like when I'm walking in the woods and my whole body is there mind, body and spirit in this place, even if people walk by it still a place of peace and I feel secure there with myself and all that is around me...I feel there's a big spirit there and I'm just this little ant walking around in a circle to my own heart beat and breath...swinging my arms and bounding my feet to the ground...I get in a complete moment of now...present as can be...thoughts then start to come in gently, I need to go back to the the basic in teaching my collage classes...new exercise and polish up on some skills of my own and with that we all will learn... how simple is that..no big bang just simply slipped right in there, inspirations that is... I know when I walk in the woods I first bring what every is troubling me or not and I enter the path knowing that at the end I'm going to be alright and in a better mind set then before... I always end with a new perspective on my life..call it endorphins or just something more purer.

So inspiration has her way of coming in and guiding me... I call her by a feminine essences because I feel that's where the whole creative thing is from Women and being we are the ones that create new life... Not alone mind you but the main carrier of it..   So again without sounding  to way out there, but only trying to understand and find purpose in my life...I connect with the earth and her wonders which if I'm in the now and present and not in my head and feeling and breathing from the heart I find that inspirations... Like the series I'm working on...something inspired me to work with monochromatic colors and come from a totally different angel and emotional state and presences... I'm unsure of the outcome but there is a strong inspirational line directing this series... I really think we are free to tap into our inspirational moment as we see fit, there is no set directions and how to's... but it's there if we are open to it.. The next thing about inspirations is to take it as a gift and act upon it... if you just receive it and not do anything with it then it's like a slap in the face..it hurts you and the giver... which I'm saying giver is where the source of your inspiration comes,  which I claim not to know for everyone or speaking for everyone...just sharing for me how it's been working.. so wondering what is in store where is this woman's(me) purpose and directions...I'm to do the art fairs and teach the workshops that fill and then I'm to set up a class with basic opportunity to learn some skills...that should take me into the spring time...with all the holiday stuff coming up and added art opportunities that;s a good plan...I'm finding out that it's not good to know to far in to the future...can't do anything with it anyways but for now there's directions and that is underline purpose and it all came from a walk in the woods with me being present in the moment...
share if you would like where your inspirations comes from or your story about inspiration..I would really like to hear...

Comments

  1. I find that "inspiration" is often perceived as positive. Some people who make art are driven by provocation, others by desperation. I find bursts of creativity in distinctively negative events. More than wanting to express my personal anger or pain, I want to complete a relationship with something outside myself. Inspiration forces itself upon me with issues larger than self like humanity, technology or money, and I am often upset.

  2. There have been many walks that began with grumbling and swearing and ended with peace and new direction. Love to walk! Those many sights and sounds and smells on that walk inspire me.
