Stained Artist Tissue papers

This piece is sold to a dear Art buddy friend but as you can see in the image the use of the stained string artists tissue papers. 10 x 10 Got Art -sold.

1. Plastic garbage bag laid out then spray with water, mist. Lay artist tissue paper down, press gently.

2. cut strings to desired lengths and amount of squares you would like. Lay gently down and mist again.

3. Lay another sheet of Artist tissue papers and mist once more. Misting the papers helps hold them in place, being the papers are so thin they can blow away very easily, also this helps the color soak in and spread through all the way to the bottom.

4. Mix equal parts water and polymer then a dab will do you in acrylics, I use the Golden fluids, work best but any acrylic will work if watered down enough. Remember you are making a stain. Very important to use a wide brush too. 5. With the wide brush gently wipe over the tissue paper, be very careful not to go over to many time in one places as this will tear the tissue papers. Note* the artist tissue papers are thin but a bit stronger then the regular gift tissues we would use for presents. But I have use them when I've run out of the artist tissue papers. 6. I mix a small amount for each sheet on a plate and work my colors around the color wheel this way I'm not wasteful and I get some great color combinations. Here is sheet that I just finished I give it one more fine misting and lay it on the floor in my studio to dry. It's best to lay flat. If I used my drying racks is might bleed and drip. It is a stain remember and that can happen.
After the papers are dried I will coat the side you see facing you with just the polymer then both side will be coated and ready for the collage technique I use with a heat seal iron, or a tack iron. By coating the papers with Polymer and letting them dry, they will be ready to use when I'm ready to collage and I can cut and tear them to there desired shapes and heat fuse them down to my substrate. A lot of prep time with this technique but when it's time to collage it work as well as soften butter.

7. 31 sheets of Artists Stained String tissue papers made yesterday.

So this was yesterdays venue, I spent pretty much of the whole day making this papers. I never know how to put the image up or post them so they work out right but I think I have it now. This what was taught in the first class at LaGrange Art League and now is being taught at the Naperville Art League now. I needed to vamp up my personal supplies so it looks as I teach Collage Exploration I at Naperville Art League I'm also making a good stock of papers for myself. Cutting the strings is the hardest, really the boring part of the creating of these papers but it sure makes for some great sheets. My youngest daughter asked why the strings? and you can't tear them mom. Your right but you can add them for that just right texture you've been looking for. It also looks like it was part of something else when you use them in your collage work. Bonus is no one else has paper just like yours. You colors you like to use extra. They sell papers like this at Dick Blick but not to this color palette though.

Well between the drying session and the second batch of papers I got to visit my new nephew at the hospital yesterday. Well I have to admit the excitement of being a grandma someday is really inviting but far from happen any time soon. But it sure is nice to hold a new born in your arms again, all the love just flows from places I forgotten about. Howie is a beautiful little angel and is doing well as my sister. She should be going home today or tomorrow. She wants to stand an extra day, can't blame her, cause she has three other boys under 13 at home so the rest is like heaven I bet.

Snow is coming down and it makes for the motherbear in me to want to head to the studio so I just might enjoy the day doing that.

So generous with your teaching knowledge Laura for those who can't always physically be in your class! Several questions, where do you get artist tissue paper, and why mist? Glad your daughter asked why add the strings? I was wondering that myself. 31 tissue creations, I suppose when you're in the zone this happens, still amazing. You've inspired me to go play with some gift tissue I have. Last photo is gorgeous, rainbow of colors makes it a beautiful photo creation worthy of framing!
Babies are angels, glad you shared that special time.

I just love stained tissue paper and they are a joy to make. My favourite is the string paper which always adds such a lovely texture and final element to the collage. Especially if you leave the dangley bits. I have real trouble getting art tissue paper over here. Will need to try the net as the tissue paper that I can get is just too weak.

Thanks for all the wonderful tips! Do you always line the paper in straight lines? Do you ever use irregular lines? I am trying more collage and sometimes I have difficulty teaching the concept to my students. May I add you on my bloglist?

Antia,
I seem to have these papers lined up in a nice grid formation, but you know the art making buz, once you got the general rules down there's no need to not break them!!! and take the chance and be the rebel right?

I think that is what I love the most Seth is seeing the paper stacked in a pile like that. When I make my hand made papers this is the same feeling seeing them stacked. I must to a piece about stacked papers or piles of papers someday. In the mean time I enjoy them like this.
