1.Gesso is use with a Cap from something I had laying around in the studio, I stamped it randomly all over the brown paper, let it dry and proceeded with the process below.

2. Here with the this application of acrylics I've mixed the paints with some water and a little of the polymer, why did that is because the brown paper is dry and soaks up the moisture, this way it spread better and doesn't soak in right away.

3. Brown paper with yellow and then the blue which I played with until I got the desired color I wanted. You can keep layering the colors.

4. Yellow, Red and blue were applied to the brown paper after the
gesso that had dried.

5. Using a plastic card (fake charge cards)from the mail I spread the
Gesso out in swatches first then let dry and came back into it with acrylics, layering the colors to the desired color. When all the layers are dried I coat the back and front with polymer.
Note: with the process I'm showing I always put a sheet of wax paper or sandwich sheet between the layers of papers, Why? is because there coated with the polymer and when it's dry it is still very tacky and don't want a collage forming with out my conceit .

Oh yes, I love gesso resists...they make some of the best papers. I think this would be the best use of the credit cards these days, too. lol

Yes the best use of that plastic. thank for stopping, I'm posting the steps on my blog for my students and anyone else that happens to venture by. I find it helps them understand if they forget when they get home.
Peace to you too,

Gesso has such a mystical quality. I never thought of gesso as resist. It is multi-purpose material for sure. Those circles are mesmorizing. Is No. 5 a separate image from the ones above it? Also brown paper is kraft paper? Like the brown as a background, nice change from say black.
Thanks for sharing. I hope you write a book someday about your art process. It would do well!
That and your book about the crows of course!!!!
I use a lot of paper in my work, but it is usually purchased. This informative, well illustrated post will make me rethink those scraps from my life that I put in the recycle box. You've really got me thinking...
Bev, to answer question yes that is a different paper but still on the brown paper/kraft paper. I just wanted to show a different texture made with the plastic charge card.
Margaret,
I'm glad to see you enjoy the paper steps. It has been said before Collage Artists were our first recyclers!!
